Recording Studio Furniture

by TR Editor

A recording studio engineer has around a couple hundred knobs, and faders to adjust while recording a session. The more organized a studio is the more creative you will be. The number one rule that I have learned is that if you sit in your chair and swivel around with your arms out, anything that you can reach to is prime location for your most used equipment.

Clutter & Cleanliness

Having a clean and clutter free studio will help open your creativity and not bog you down with a crammed workspace.

Studio Tables / Desks

Studio desks are available that have features similar to a roll out keyboard shelf, only they have a roll out monitor shelf and two roll out keyboard shelves one for a computer keyboard and the other for a musical keyboard. these desks also cater a fair amount of rack space and a main desk area for your mixer.

Now doesn't that sound a little more efficient than having a couple of desks strung together with end tables everywhere housing your studio gear. I think so, but only buy what you can afford, we have all heard the phrase "a starving artist" I know not all musicians can afford one of these custom desks, but if you can afford it, I recommend getting one, you wont regret it.

Rack Mount

There is a rack mount unit called "music peoples rack mount stand" these are great racks for a great price. They only cost about 30-40 bucks a pop, and they sit really nice beside a computer monitor.

Equipment Storage

All recording studios have an excessive amount of cables, mics and excessive adaptors so why not make a storage space for all of this stuff. having a small cabinet to store your mics and cables in will extend the life of your microphones and remove a lot of the clutter out of your recording studio. Guitar stands and instrument stands will also prolong the life of your guitar or instrument of choice. this may prevent the neck of your guitar from getting bent and bashed around from leaning it against random objects.

Proper Studio Chair

Our evolution of mankind will all end up being a bunch of hunch backs from working on computers all day long. do yourself a favor (if you haven't already) and get a nice chair with lumbar support and the works for your computer desk. I can tell you that your back will thank you for years to come, back supports (back cushion) can be used on older chairs for a lesser cost than buying a new chair.

Speaker Placement

Speaker placement is very important in a recording studio. As a recording engineer you want to hear the sound flat with out any added sound of the rooms acoustics. the reason for this is that you will be the only one who will hear the song in that speaker/room atmosphere. Where as the listener of your CD may be listening to it on a Walkman in a car or in any number of sound differed environments.

The walls of your studio may cause reflections, acting like reverb on your tracks, this is why speaker placement is a crucial part in your studio arrangement.

Speaker stands are a great spot to have speakers. lifting them off the floor for unwanted base and away from the walls causing less dead sound spots in the room.

If you are into 5.1 surround mixing then you obviously realize the importance of speaker positioning,

The Fung Shui of your Studio

Keep your studio look cool and creative, maybe add a touch of lava lamps or artwork that may inspire your musical creativity. just remember that any creative drive that you get could lead to you writing and/or producing the next #1 hit.
