Creative Block

Use a random note generator, and create a mixture of notes, keep repeating this process until you hear a few consecutive notes that create a nice hook, once you have this you can fill in the rest.

Get Past your Creative Block

Think outside of the box, there is no one correct way to make music. There are millions of combinations of instruments whether they are virtual or real, teamed up with thousands of different effects and millions of different presets, and all of this equals infinite possibilities in how you create your music. Try teaming up with other artists or producers to see how they write produce their songs, and see what kind of tips you may be able to learn from them.

Let other music influence yourself. Don't just listen to music in the genre you are producing, listen to a variety of styles, you'll be surprised with the results of drawing elements from different genres to mix with your current style

Change your Song Writing Environment

By emerging yourself in a different environment your mood will be affected, and if your mood changes so does the essence you put into your music. You don't necessarily have to use a different room maybe try changing the lighting (possibly even the colour of the lighting) or the positioning of the furniture around the room.

Working in a Clean Environment

When everything's clean you can be more productive and have more control over what your doing, its sounds weird but working in a mess slows you down and agitates/distracts you from what you are trying to accomplish. This also applies to having a clean computer if that's what you use to produce your music. Having organized, properly named files and folders you will be able to access things in half the time, giving you twice as much time to put into your music.

Do Some Tutorials and Research

Many great ideas are piggy backed from another pre-excisting idea, and tutorials are helpful more than just that, you can learn new approaches to take on your songs and learn how to use your equipment or software that much better.

Don't let your sound control you, learn the ability to manipulate sound the way you want, instead of waiting for a studio “fluke” to happen.

Get some new samples/instruments/effects boards/gear to help extend you creative possibilities. Having lots of gear does not promise you a hit song but it does help you put ideas from your head to audio better. Try featuring key characteristics of different hard/soft synths, and using different sample CD's to get out of a one-track mindset.

Take a Break

If you find yourself hammering away at a track and not really getting anywhere with it, take a break. Coming back to a mix with a clear head and fresh ears is sometimes the best way to get past your creative block. Try taking a break for a few days and before you know it ideas will be filling your head and you will be twitching with excitement to get back into your studio or song writing environment.
